After a promising 3-0 start to 2008, Wisconsin Badgers fell to two close defeats at Michigan and at home against Ohio State. Penn State and Iowa won comfortably as the Badgers were suddenly faced with a 3-4 record and needing to turn things around to make it to postseason. A 27-17 win against Illinois was followed by another tight defeat at Michigan State. A 35-32 win against Minnessota and a 36-35 victory against Cal Poly ensured an invitation to the Champs Sports Bowl. Florida State Seminoles ended up comfortable 42-13 winners as Badgers crashed to their second Bowl defeat of 2008 having lost to Tennessee at the end of the 2007 season.
