Who’s the number one team in men’s college basketball? What is the criteria for determining who sits alone at the top of the rankings? Last weekend when Tennessee beat #1 Memphis, some people thought they should not have moved up to the spot when they lost two games prior to that game when Memphis was undefeated.

This happens very often in sports. It often seems as if a team gets so hyped up to play an undefeated or number one team and what usually happens? Hmmm. That same team that pulled off the upset usually have tough competition within the next few games and they end up losing. So in reality it’s back to square one. There’s no real number one team.

It’s motivation in itself for a team to play the number one team with everything they have. It could be argued that Memphis should not be number 1 because they have a cupcake schedule in conference USA.

Most critics don’t give the Memphis Tigers a real chance to win it all in San Antonio because of their soft schedule. That has been proven every year that by having a soft schedule will guarantee a loss and early exit from the tournament. Also by having a soft schedule makes it virtually impossible to make the men’s NCAA championship game in San Antonio.

Well, the Volunteers are 2-1 against their in-state rivals, with a split of Vanderbilt. Other teams need to take notice because when Tennessee is poised, they rarely make mistakes, and unlike Memphis, they actually make free throws down the stretch.

Also, as many sports fans are aware of across the country, Vanderbilt bring big crowds to away games. They have a true crowd for home games, just like many colleges. Either way, just look around when your favorite teams is home against Vanderbilt and you will see a lot of Vanderbilt Commodores merchandise in the stands.
