Joe Paterno’s Penn State Nittany Lions will be in confident mood for the new season having won a share of the Big Ten Championship in 2008 and making the Rose Bowl. Racing to a 9-0 lead for the season, Penn State were ranked as high as second at one point, prior their match against Iowa. They managed to restrict the opposition scoring to less than ten points for five out of their total 11 wins in 2008. Highlights included 38-24 win against Illinois and road victories at Wisconsin and Ohio State. The only loss of the regular season came when Penn State allowed Iowa a last gasp field goal which sent them to a 23-24 loss. Comfortable wins against Indiana and Michigan State followed before a Rose Bowl showdown against 4th ranked USC. A bad second quarter saw USC score 24 unanswered points and the Lions never recovered, eventually losing 24-38.
