LeBron James Wears Fangs During Game

LeBron James is viewed as some kind of villain by many, and now, those anti-fans have a visual to right along with that perception.
James had the Halloween spirit during Friday night’s home-opening win over the Magic, sporting a mouthguard complete with clearly visible fangs attached.
Naturally, the NBA Twitter crowd was all over it. The first picture up top is via @jose3030, and the one below giving us a closer look was posted by CNBC’s Darren Rovell, who is likely correct in his assertion that James will receive a nominal fine from the league office for this particular form of personal expression.

Denny Hamlin Wins Martinsville Pole

Considering Denny Hamlin‘s record at Martinsville Speedway — two straight victories and three wins in the last five races — you wouldn’t think he’d be too worried about whether he could hold onto the pole position for Sunday’s Tums Fast Relief 500 after posting the fastest lap in his qualifying run Friday.
But winning the pole means getting the pick of the pit stalls, and at Martinsville the best one is first in line, right behind the exit line of the pits.
So as Hamlin waited nervously in the lounge of his team transporter while the rest of the field took their runs, he was. . . well, let’s let him describe it in his usual frank manner: “I wasn’t wishing bad luck,” he said, “but I was just like, ‘Slip, slip, slip, slip.’
“It came true for us. We’ve had to work extra hard today because we have worked just on qualifying.”
The pole position at this tight, half-mile short track was “objective number one” for Hamlin and he and his team devoted all of practice to the qualifying setup.

Giants Concerned as Jonathan Sanchez Comes Up Short Again in Game 3

ARLINGTON, Texas — Anyone who follows the Giants knows that Jonathan Sanchez has had a bit of a schizophrenic career, with Good Sanchez and Bad Sanchez.
You can add this one: Tired Sanchez.
That’s the one who has the Giants worried.
After Sanchez gave up four runs and couldn’t get out of the fifth inning in the Giants 4-2 loss to the Rangers in Game 3 of the World Series, pitching coach Dave Righetti said Sanchez’s lost velocity has become an area of concern.
“It bothers me a little bit,” Righetti said. “It’s the end of the year. He’s a young kid … but it’s short. After a rest, too, so it’s something to be looked at. There’s no question.”

Game 2 of World Series Sees Another Drop in TV Ratings

Game 2 of the World Series produced another slide in television ratings compared to last fall, with a drop of 26 percent from its 2009 counterpart.
The Giants‘ 9-0 win over the Rangers drew an 8.5 rating for FOX and was watched by 14.1 million people, according to Nielsen Media Research. That was the second-lowest number ever for a Game 2, trailing only the 8.1 rating drawn by the Rays-Phillies matchup in 2008.
Last year’s Yankees-Phillies Game 2 garnered an 11.5 rating.
Viewership was down slightly from Wednesday night’s Game 1 broadcast, which drew an 8.9 rating.

More Pau Gasol, More Problems for Lakers’ Opponents
October 31, 2010 | Leave a Comment
PHOENIX — The thought of the Lakers fortifying their bench in the offseason with proven role players like Steve Blake and Matt Barnes might be frightening enough for any team with visions of taking down the two-time defending champions.
But if Pau Gasol is no longer the forgotten superstar on the offensive end of the floor, and he actually gets the additional touches that he both wants and deserves, that would be absolutely devastating for anyone standing in L.A.’s path to a third straight championship.
Now of course, it’s early. We’re two games into the season. But so far? That appears to be exactly what’s happening.
Gasol was dominant in the Lakers 114-106 road win over the Suns on Friday, putting up a near-triple-double line of 21 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists. He did it with 17 shot attempts, only two fewer than Kobe Bryant, who finished with 19 but was aggressive from the start with nine in the first quarter.
Gasol finishing a close second to Bryant in field goal attempts isn’t exactly earth-shattering news. But through the Lakers first two games, Gasol is averaging 20 to Bryant’s 19.5, and leads the team in that category — by one — at 40-39.
I know — really small sample size, to be sure. But listening to Bryant speak after the win in Phoenix, you get the feeling it’s by design, and something that could very well continue as the season rolls on.

Late Goal Lifts FC Dallas to Dramatic 2-1 Win over Real Salt Lake in First Leg
October 31, 2010 | Leave a Comment
Filed under: FC Dallas, Real Salt Lake

Three fabulous goals, brilliant saves from each goalkeeper and a pair of second-half red cards highlighted an incident-filled playoff opener between FC Dallas and visiting Real Salt Lake that ended in a dramatic 2-1 victory for the hosts.
The result puts significant pressure on Salt Lake heading back to Rio Tinto Stadium, where the reigning MLS champion hasn’t lost in 17 months. But they’ll kick off the second leg on Nov. 6 without creator Javier Morales, one of the players ejected by referee Kevin Stott on Saturday.
Stott risked being the game’s chief talking point until the 88th minute, when he smartly kept his whistle silent as Dallas playmaker David Ferreira (above, left) was muscled over while dribbling in the RSL half. He managed to touch it to reserve midfielder Eric Avila as he fell, and the San Diego native did the rest, unleashing an unstoppable drive from just outside the penalty area that beat RSL’s Nick Rimando inside the left post.

Rocco Mediate Snaps Drought With Frys.com Open Win

If Rocco Mediate‘s victory in the Frys.com Open Sunday doesn’t make your windmill spin, then you really, really don’t appreciate golf. Mediate, a 47-year-old good guy with a chronically bad back and a permanent smile, didn’t just win the PGA Tour’s event at CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin, Calif., he made it compelling.
On the way to a 15-under finish and one-stroke margin over Bo Van Pelt and Alex Prugh, Mediate holed out for eagle for the fourth straight day, on Sunday hitting a pitching wedge from 116 yards that spun back into the cup on the par-4 17th.
Mediate had no explanation. Actually, his initial response was a question: “What’s going on?”
The answer: something special.
Mediate got started on Thursday with a hole-in-one on the 191-yard par-3 third hole. On Friday he holed a 160-yard second shot, and on Saturday made 3 on the par-5 15th by holding a 111-yard wedge. It helped him build a 3-shot lead to take into Sunday’s final round, and for a player ranked 182nd on the money list and looking at no exempt status promised for next year, it was an opportunity not to be wasted.

Dayne Crist, Notre Dame Quarterback, Suffers Knee Injury and Is Out for Year

Notre Dame quarterback Dayne Crist will miss the rest of the season with a ruptured patella tendon in his left knee, according to NBC Sports’ Alex Flanagan.
Crist suffered the injury in Saturday’s game against Tulsa in the first quarter when he was hit hard and driven out of bounds by Tulsa’s Tanner Antle following a 29-yard run.
At this point in the game, Notre Dame had been trailing 7-0 and Crist was 0 of 2 passing.
Freshman quarterback Tommy Rees replaced Crist, who had thrown for 2,033 yards and 15 touchdowns against seven interceptions this season.
Thus far, Rees has thrown for over 250 yards passing and four touchdowns in relief.

Jurgen Klinsmann Set to Join Toronto FC as Consultant

Eager to please a fan base exhausted by four years of losing and angry with club ownership over ticket price hikes, Toronto FC reportedly is turning to a man that many soccer fans throughout North America regard as a savior: Jürgen Klinsmann.
U.S. Soccer Federation president Sunil Gulati twice has tried to woo Klinsmann to be national team coach, but each time negotiations broke down over the German-Californian’s desire for more control. His only job since the 2006 World Cup was a nine-month stint with Bayern Munich that ended in acrimony.
Yet Klinsmann’s success with the German national team in 2006, his cosmopolitan air and the fact that he’s always available continue to lead many believe that he’s capable of great things in management. Desperate for some stability after dismissing its coach and GM and missing the playoffs for a record-tying fourth consecutive year, Toronto FC appears ready to take the plunge.
