Kansas Jayhawks

After a 5-1 start to the 2008 season, Kansas Jayhawks lost four of their next five games. The winning start to the season meant that they were invited to the Insight Bowl where they comfortably defeated Minnesota 42-21 winning a Bowl game for the third time in four years. Finishing last season 8-5 was disappointing considering the 12-1 record of the divisional championship co-winning season in 2007. The Homecoming defeat to Texas Tech 63-21 probably hurt the most that season while the 52-21 win against Kansas State helped them reach the Bowl. Mark Mangino, in charge for the eighth season, has to plan life without linebackers James Holt and Mike Rivera who have departed to San Diego Chargers and Chicago Bears respectively. Holt was the defensive MVP at the Insight Bowl last season.

Colorado Buffaloes

Last posting a winning season record in 2005, Colorado Buffaloes have had to make staff changes and bring Bob Foster out of retirement appointing him outside linebackers coach. Head Coach Dan Hawkins will turn to his old mentor who has never had a losing record in hope to reverse the Buffaloes fortunes. With only two Conference Game victories last season, the Buffs never looked confident and a 58-0 loss at Missouri was by far the lowest point of the season. The staff changes could have a positive effect on the side who are yet to have a winning season under Hawkins and have not won a Bowl game since EV1.net Houston Bowl against Texas El-Paso. Darryl Scott’s impressive performance in the Spring Game and Demetrius Sumler’s 47 yard play was also encouraging.
