Hansbrough Gets Male ACC Athlete of the Year Honors
July 29, 2008 | Leave a Comment
Tyler Hansbrough is the 2007-08 ACC Male Athlete of the Year. Winners of the Male Athlete of the Year get the McKevlin Award.
UNC’s Hansbrough surprisingly did not receive over half of the total votes. He received only 28 of 67 votes. Somdev Devvarman received 20 votes. Buster Posey received 12 votes.
I’m sure UNC fans would much rather win a championship and sport their North Carolina Tar Heels merchandise rather than have a player with Athlete of the Year honors.
Angela Tincher, pitcher of Virginia Tech softball team, won the Mary Garber Award as the best female athlete. Tincher beat out some other deserving young females.
Hansbrough joins UNC’s Lennie Rosenbluth and Antawn Jamison and Duke’s Christian Laettner as just the fourth player to win national player of the year, ACC Player of the Year, ACC Tournament MVP and NCAA Regional MVP honors in the same year. He led the ACC in scoring, rebounding, free throws made and free throws attempted.
Hansbrough is the 13th UNC player to win the McKevlin Award.
UNC basketball players have won the award 10 times. That ties the mark with Duke men’s basketball for the most McKevlin Awards won by a sport at one school.
Tim Tebow or Tyson Lee

Football fans are getting to see a different kind of football star this upcoming season. Everyone has heard of Tim Tebow after his record setting year. He scored over 50 touchdowns on the ground and in the air. Then went on to win the most prestigious award in college football as a sophomore. But the most amazing thing about Tebow is his integrity and the fact that he is such a great role model. He spent the summer going on Mission trips to preach the gospel to young people around the world. He just seems to be using football as a platform to try to do some of the good works that he is interested in. When asked if he wanted to be like Archie Griffin and win two Heisman trouphys. He said that would be fine but he would rather be like his idle Danny Waurfel who led Florida as quarterback years ago and then won only one Heisman but used his fame to spread the gospel and do good things for young people around the world.
Well Mississippi State has their on star on the horizon that has the Tebow kind of Character. Tyson Lee a young man from Columbus Ms has moved into a spot to help lead the Bulldogs to another season that may really excite the Bulldog family. MSU had its best record last season under the first black SEC coach Sylvester Croom. Tyson played Junior college ball last season at Itawamba Community college but not for the reason most eventual SEC stars play Community College ball. He had the grades all along. As a matter of fact I imagine knowing Tyson that he probably has a 4.0. The sad fact was that because of his size he was overlooked coming out of high school by the SEC schools. Even more he had to walk on at MSU last spring but it didn’t take Croom long to notice the kind of player Tyson is. He is now on a full scholarship and Sly was talking about Tyson being part of a two QB system at MSU. But knowing the character of this young man I am looking for more and more playing time. If there ever was a Sylvester Croom type of player Tyson Lee is him.
I for one would like to thank young men like Tyson and Tim for being the kind of people they are. Thanks for being the kind of role models our kids need.
UCLA Releases 2008-2009 Basketball Schedule

UCLA’s 2008-09 men’s basketball schedule is highlighted by non-conference contests in the 2008 2K Sports Classic, benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer, that culminates in Madison Square Garden; a trip to Austin, Texas to face the Texas Longhorns in the Pac-10/Big 12 Series; hosting Wyoming and hosting Notre Dame in the Bruins’ final non-conference game of the season. Bruins fans, with their UCLA Bruins merchandise, are glad for a tough schedule like this. They more than likely won’t make it deep into the playoffs without playing a tough schedule.
The field for the 16-team 2K Sports Classic has not been announced. Four teams will host the four-team preliminary rounds on Nov. 10-14 at on-campus sites with the winners advancing to the semifinals at Madison Square Garden in New York, on Nov. 20 and the finals on Nov. 21.
The Bruins will also play in the 15th annual Wooden Classic on Saturday, Dec. 13 at the Honda Center in Anaheim against DePaul. This will be UCLA’s sixth consecutive Wooden Classic appearance and 12th overall. Last year, the Bruins defeated Davidson 75-63 in the Wooden Classic.
UCLA, the defending back-to-back-to-back regular season Pac-10 champion, opens defense of its conference crown in early January at Oregon State. The 2008 Pac-10 Tournament, featuring all 10 teams, will once again be held at the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles.
In 2007-08, UCLA advanced to its third straight Final Four, finishing the season with a school-record 35 victories and a 35-4 overall mark. The Bruins won their third consecutive Pac-10 championship with a 16-2 mark. UCLA also won the 2008 Pacific Life Pac-10 Tournament and has won 30 or more games in three straight seasons for the first time in school history.
The schedule is tentative and subject to change due to television. While the dates have been set, the Bruins are still looking for one more home game and one exhibition opponent.
Two More Bowl Games Added

The NCAA has approved applications for 34 football bowl games for 2008, including 32 existing bowls and two new games in Washington, D.C., and St. Petersburg, Fla. Fans from the schools that seem to get snubbed from a bowl game should be pleased. Buckeye fans, with their Ohio State Buckeyes merchandise on, probably could care a less if there were extra bowl games or not. They need to focus on winning a national championship.
The NCAA Postseason Football Licensing Subcommittee on Wednesday also turned down a request for a proposed Rocky Mountain Bowl in Salt Lake City.
The new bowl games for next season will be the Congressional Bowl in the nation’s capital and the St. Petersburg Bowl.
Licenses were renewed for the Allstate Sugar, AT&T Cotton, AutoZone Liberty, BCS National Championship, Bell Helicopter Armed Forces, Brut Sun, Capital One, Champs Sports, Chick-fil-A, Emerald, Fed Ex Orange, Gaylord Hotels Music City, GMAC, Roady’s Humanitarian, Insight, International, Konica Minolta Gator, Meineke Car Care, Motor City, New Mexico, Outback, Pacific Life Holiday, Papajohns.com, PetroSun Independence, Pioneer Las Vegas, R+L Carriers New Orleans, Rose, San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia, Sheraton Hawaii, Texas, Tostitos Fiesta and Valero Alamo bowls.
The subcommittee, meeting in Weston, Fla., also reported about 1.6 million fans attended last season’s bowl games, and about $222 million in revenue from those games was distributed to the participating teams and conferences.
Ole Miss Football Spring Review
July 6, 2008 | Leave a Comment
The Houston Nutt era at Ole Miss really began on March 20 with the beginning of spring drills.
Nutt succeeded Ed Orgeron. He led the Razorbacks to eight bowl games and three SEC Western Division titles. He usually wins about seven games per season.
After Nutt’s first spring at the helm of the Ole Miss program, Rebel fans demonstrated their renewed faith in the program by responding with increased season ticket sales and overflow audiences at alumni functions. They bought a lot of Ole Miss merchandise, hoping that their team has a good year.
Although Nutt entered his first spring at Ole Miss with a team that returned 47 lettermen, the slate was wiped clean as everyone went back to square one. Nutt’s approach when he came on board in December was to not concentrate on last year’s down year season.
One significant change in the experienced offensive line was having guard John Jerry. Another change affecting the offensive line was the movement of sophomore running back Reggie Hicks to tight end.
One area that Nutt doesn’t seem to have any major concerns is at wide receiver, which he rates as probably one of the most talented groups he’s been around in a long time.
