ANN ARBOR, Mich. -Justin Boren one of two returning starters off of Lloyd Carrs Michigan team from a year ago has left the team. He said the reason he was leaving was due to an erosion of the family values. He says according to the Associated Press that the Michigan of old was very much a family value oriented team. I don’t dought this because Lloyd Carr was a class act. But I am stongly wondering if this is the case because if it was I don’t know that the fact that Boren is blasting the new coach and staff doesn’t seem like a family value type thing to do. Maybe he should have tried to watch his ex-coach and tried to imulate him and go softly into the night.

Boren who was 6-foot-3, 310-pound would have been the most experienced lineman coming back. The junior-to-be started every game last season, either at center or left guard.

After leaving the team on Monday he blasted the coaches with this statment on Wednesday.“Michigan football was a family, built on mutual respect and support for each other from (former) Coach (Lloyd) Carr on down. We knew it took the entire family, a team effort, and we all worked together.

“I have great trouble accepting that those family values have eroded in just a few months. ” … That I am unable to perform under these circumstances at the level I expect of myself, and my teammates and Michigan fans deserve, is why I have made the decision to leave.”

He may have had trouble adapting to new coach Rich Rodriguez’s no-huddle spread offense.  He mentioned the difficulty the offensive linemen had constantly running to the line of scrimmage. Sounds like Mr. Boren needed to do some conditioning.

Rodriguez said “I don’t know if we’ll have any more (attrition), but we’re forging ahead with guys that play for Michigan,” the coach said.

Way to go coach talk about the people who stayed not the quitters.

ala-2piece-lg.jpgThe weather is warming up and the kids are needing a swimwear. I found some great deals on some Alabama Crimson Tide Girls Swim Suits. The Spring Breaks are going on around the country. Kid are headed to the beaches and the swmming pools and what better way to show you team spirit than to wear an Alabama Crimson Tide bathing suit.

With so many college teams, there has to be a playoff system in place that can allow competitive play while not being excessively long. Every team’s goal is to win a championship but first a team has to make it into the field of 64 teams. Every year there is some debate between the good enough teams omitted and some not-as-good teams barely making it in.

College basketball has something called RPI which takes into account wins, losses, quality wins, seeds, opponents records, etc. Of course there’s controversy about that because, for instance, Arizona State beat Arizona twice in the regular season but Arizona State didn’t make it into the field of 64 but their rival Arizona did.

Now the field is down to 16 and there are two #1 that many analysts predict will be on upset alert in the Sweet 16 and they are UCLA and Memphis. People agree that the other two #1 seeds of North Carolina and Kansas will be moving on with no difficulty, but there’s no guarantee of anything unless something is mathematically certain or impossible.

Kansas is overrated to a lot of people. Kansas love their team and their Kansas Jayhawks merchandise. If their team makes it to San Antonio, then they won’t have as far to travel as most teams would.

UCLA is put on upset alert because of their close wins against teams that they should have easily beat. They keep getting favorable calls in the last few seconds of games, many of which have been controversy.

Memphis is a solid team but they have one major flaw; they can’t make free throws to save their lives. They are the third worst free shooting team in college basketball. Shooting an average of 60 percent and not even 50 percent against Mississippi State would normally signal a sure loss. If Memphis made most of their free throws, then the game would not have been close. If Memphis does not get their free throw shooting together, they will not win the championship.

Who is a strong favorite to win the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship in San Antonio on April 7? North Carolina surely is. They have everything that a good team needs to be successful in college basketball.

They surely are not the only team that are favored to win it all. Tennessee, Memphis, and UCLA are the other three teams most often picked to be cutting down the net.

As we all know, there can be only one team that can celebrate in the end. What was once 64 teams will be cut down to 32, Sweet 16, Elite 8, and the Final 4. 63 teams will be heartbroken and that’s why teams have to bring their A game for every minute that they are out on the court.

North Carolina has Hansborough, which many consider to be the best player in men’s college hoops. This man seems to get the job done against any opponent. Sometimes people think that some teams only have one player on it. Even though there can only be 5 players per team playing on the court at any given time, the previous statement is often made when one person seems to carry the team on his shoulders and the team seems to collapse without the superstar. However, this is what puts North Carolina into an elite class that few teams in college basketball can go into because they are the total package and not the product of one player.

People generally agree on the fact that North Carolina fans tend to support their team at home and on the road. So during the length of North Carolina’s tournament, opponents better get used to the abundance of North Carolina Tar Heels merchandise.

As Houston Nutt prepares for spring football practice, he probably has been making a “list of things to do”. Nutt has an incredible track record and the Ole Miss football squad is lucky to have him. He is right up there with ex-Rebels Coach Tommy Tubberville  in his knowledge and expertise of  football strategy and implementation.

Spring practice at University of Mississippi starts today, March 17 and extends through April 12th. Last season the Ole Miss Rebels football team finished 0-8 in the Southeastern Conference under the direction of Coach O. Their overall record was 3-9.

So what might Nutt’s TTD list look like today?

1. find a quarterback

2. find a tailback

3. get a new center ready

4. increase the size of the defense

Newsflash…the spring practice that was scheduled to start today, was postponed until Wednesday or Thursday because of the NIT basketball playoff tournament. So we’ll keep you updated about what is going on with Rebel football.

There is really alot of excitement among the fans about Coach Nutt and what his leadership could mean for the Rebel Nation. Hopefully, the tradition of The Grove will flourish again. A really cool Smack Apparel t-shirt just came out that says, Goin’ Nutts and the back of the shirt says, Houston, we have a coach….and we’re goin’ Nutts in Oxford.

It is no secret that the Bruins are a good team. They surely are playing like it. The Bruins will be playing the winner of the California/Washington game in the quarterfinals of the 2008 Pacific Life Pac 10 Tournament.

Michael Roll and Nikola Dragovic missed the game yesterday with injuries.

The 30-time conference champion UCLA Bruins enter as the top seed in the 2008 Pacific Life Pac-10 Conference Tournament. Twice UCLA has entered the Pac-10 Tournament as the number one seed and went on to win the title. However, the Bruins entered as the top seed last year and lost 76-69 in overtime to California in the quarterfinals.

UCLA has been ranked in the top 10 in the Associated Press poll for 39 straight weeks, which is tied with North Carolina for the longest active streak in the country. Kansas is third with 31 straight weeks, followed by Memphis with 25 consecutive weeks. Duke rounds out the top five with 16 straight weeks in the top 10. All streaks include final and preseason polls.

UCLA also possesses one of the best backcourts in the nation. All three of the starting guards average double figures in scoring.

The Pac 10 is famous for producing good teams and this year is no different. Usually there are two Pac 10 teams in the top 5 but several teams look promising as they all can be a threat on any given day or night.

Either way it goes Bruins fans will be in full force with their UCLA Bruins merchandise on as they cheer their team on.

thanksbrett-t.jpgAwe Man was I shocked to hear the the great Brett Farve retired. He has contributed so much to the game. From his days in High School in Mississippi. To his college days at Southern Mississippi. And what a career with Green Bay. There is a really neat Brett Farve T-Shirt online. I am including a picture of it here. Good Luck Brett in all that you do and THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES.

You know since Tim Tebow was awarded the Heisman Trophy his popularity has really grown across the US and beyond. I was really impressed at his value system and the way in which he honors God in all that he does.

Tim has become a hero for people of all ages and yes fans from other teams! However, there is one person, who I will not disclose their name, who is getting very jealous with all of the media attention bestowed on Tebow. See the cartoon below.

Head football coach, Butch Davis of the North carolina Tar Heels had his team running drills and preparing for the upcoming sping football game scheduked for April 5. The team finished last season with a 4-8 record and 3-5 in the ACC. They are the second ACC team to start spring drills.

NC Tar Heels have a fair amount of players returning, however, the buzz is about who will play QB. Paulus, a four star prospect was beaten out by Yates last pre-season. Yates now suffering from a shoulder injury will be sidelined this spring. Thus giving Paulus the opportunity to showcase his skills this spring.

Coach Davis will have 10 returning starters on offense. They have also signed 5 linebackers to  give them more depth. Expect to see great things happen on offensive line with  four out of five starters back from last season.

This will be UNC second spring practice under Coach Davis. If they can keep the key players  healthy, the fans should be looking forward to a much improved season over last year.

Who’s the number one team in men’s college basketball? What is the criteria for determining who sits alone at the top of the rankings? Last weekend when Tennessee beat #1 Memphis, some people thought they should not have moved up to the spot when they lost two games prior to that game when Memphis was undefeated.

This happens very often in sports. It often seems as if a team gets so hyped up to play an undefeated or number one team and what usually happens? Hmmm. That same team that pulled off the upset usually have tough competition within the next few games and they end up losing. So in reality it’s back to square one. There’s no real number one team.

It’s motivation in itself for a team to play the number one team with everything they have. It could be argued that Memphis should not be number 1 because they have a cupcake schedule in conference USA.

Most critics don’t give the Memphis Tigers a real chance to win it all in San Antonio because of their soft schedule. That has been proven every year that by having a soft schedule will guarantee a loss and early exit from the tournament. Also by having a soft schedule makes it virtually impossible to make the men’s NCAA championship game in San Antonio.

Well, the Volunteers are 2-1 against their in-state rivals, with a split of Vanderbilt. Other teams need to take notice because when Tennessee is poised, they rarely make mistakes, and unlike Memphis, they actually make free throws down the stretch.

Also, as many sports fans are aware of across the country, Vanderbilt bring big crowds to away games. They have a true crowd for home games, just like many colleges. Either way, just look around when your favorite teams is home against Vanderbilt and you will see a lot of Vanderbilt Commodores merchandise in the stands.
